The Hipsters are back...and this time they're attacking your face

It all started with a photo of a bride and her bridesmaid. Totally cute and sweet. But then I looked closer and I realized: "is that bridesmaid sporting a perm? And oversize, hardcore nerd glasses?" She's like the Steve Urkel of the wedding party here. What?

Then, the more I thought about it, I realized I've been seeing these giant nerd glasses popping up all over fashion blogs. Behold, hipster-itis in full effect:

Do you think these people just woke up one day and said, "I think I will personally campaign to bring back the 80s, and I'll do so through my fashion choices. Fugly plaid, canvas sneakers, and giant corrective glasses, here I come!"

Why have just one hipster with giant nerd glasses when you can have two?

I wonder if they shop at the same glasses store.

Anne Sage of The City Sage is brilliant and adorable and I do think she actually kinda pulls off these glasses, but really? You too, Anne? Three hipster cliches in one? (I'll let you count for yourself...)

(Hint - #1: giant nerd glasses; #2: red lipstick; #3: pictures in front of lucha libre masks (from Mexican wrestling). Isn't she so ironic? ;)

And finally, hipster glasses for the more mature set. See, pairing anything with a vintage quilted Chanel bag makes you super grown-up and super hip, didn't you know? It also strongly reminds me of my grandma...

So there you have it. Please pardon my snarky tone. I am only (kinda) kidding. :) I do think some of these examples are pretty cute... And let's be honest - my fashion stylings tend to run more preppy than edgy so I can't really talk (though I did rock the gold loafer look - so trendy now - back in 3rd grade - does that count?).

Are you feeling the huuuuge glasses?

Elementary chic: Mara Hoffman Spring 2010

The Spring 2010 collection from Mara Hoffman is everything you learned in kindergarten at its best: primary and pastel colors, geometric shapes, and lines, lines, lines (both in the prints and in the cuts). I am totally in love with these bright, geometric prints dresses.

And lest ye be concerned that MH can only do geometrics, here's a gorg floral that I also loved:

So, in the words of my ever-mature brother, in yo face (if you thought MH was limited...). :)

The Hipsters did it!

Coming home from Mother's Day dinner last night (hope you all had a good one, and a good weekend!), B and I stopped to put gas in the car. In my old home town of Columbia, MD, I observed a slew of hipster high school boys hanging out at the BP gas station in their brand-spankin'-new-but-meant-to-look-old kicks, paired with ironic t-shirts and hipster haircuts. So many hipsters around these days. I think this tee is hilarious:

Spotted here and available here.

And in case you're completely out of touch, or just slightly confused about what a hipster is, here is a bingo card slash cheatsheet:

Watch out for those hipsters! ;)

Tweets from before Twitter

What would King Tut or Alfred Hitchcock have tweeted to the masses if Twitter was around in their respective times? I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess it wouldn't be "smashed on honey wine! heading down to the nile to look for biddies" or "Damn birds!" I would have loved to receive tweets from, say, Oscar Wilde or Marilyn Monroe (I bet hers would've been good!).

If you're curious, you can check out Historical Tweets and pretend like you're reading tweets from historical figures. They're hilarious. I mean, Ghandi, dieting? Whaaa?:

Ha.

Here are some other good ones:

Haaahahaha. Seriously, too funny. And there's a book of these coming out soon. (Hello, gift for my little brother...oops, hope he isn't reading this.)

Wall struck: wallpaper

Step aside, Golden Girls! We're stealing yo' style. Wallpaper is back with a vengeance and this isn't just the palm leaf paper from Blanche's bedroom...(that was for you, Val - I love GG references!)

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm totally digging the wallpaper style as of late. Take a look and let me know if you're into it too (or if I'm rapidly slipping into geriatric territory - yikes!):

Kelly Wearstler's imperial trellis print is by far my fave. So hot.
Photo by Elouise, spotted on Oh Happy Day!

The ever-famous Miles Redd did this room (as seen in Domino Mag, RIP). I love how the slightly overly feminine wallpaper is punched up with turquoise and chevron stripes - two of my favorite things.

More imperial trellis; I couldn't resist. This time in green and, surprisingly, looking a bit traditional when paired with white and dark wood.

Before I get too carried away with the old-looking stuff, I thought I'd revert back to the style that really calls my name - young, light, fresh and quirky. In case you're wondering what's on the wallpaper above, it's ostriches. Take a closer look below:

Yep, these snaps are from the living room of Michelle Adams (the genius behind Lonny Mag). I never knew I'd love ostriches on a wall so much. Oh but I do.

And finally, wouldn't this be amazing to come home to?:

Jordan Ferney of Oh Happy Day
's entryway - pretty and sweet. Pretty sweet. The best part? That's temporary wallpaper that can be removed - a renter's dream!

So what's the verdict? Love? Hate? I need to lay off the Metamucil?

I am very tempted to try the temporary wallpaper idea on our tiny entryway, but I think B and I might get a preemptive divorce (is that possible if you're not yet married?) if I try to rope him into helping me. I do love the look though!

Want to see more? Check out some of my other takes on wallpaper here, here and here.

Have a great weekend!

Photo via Mary Ruffle

Happy Friday!

Another busy, busy day. I gotta run, but wanted to say hello and happy Friday! The sun is shining and I've got a scooter all prepped to go for the weekend. I certainly can't complain. :) I hope you have a fabulous weekend and see you back here Monday!

And in case you're feeling less bubble-gum-sunshine-y and more edgy, I'll leave you with this pic of someone's bad-ass grandma:

Isn't she cool?

Photo from The Sartorialist of course.

Symmetry scarves

Seeing that tomorrow is the official first day of spring (halle-frickin'-lujah!), I realized I was in a now-or-never situation for posting these new scarves from Symmetry:

They're obviously too heavy for spring - though I was recently informed that scarves are in all year long now (What am I - 80? I know I can wear a scarf whenever I want to! Thank you for sharing, snarky sales girl who was 12 ;) ) - but perhaps they're worth the wait for next year (and they're not available until next fall anyway). What do you think? Cool or weird?

I love the hardware and the I-just-threw-this-on-and-look-what-an-oh-so-cool-shape-it-made-without-me-even-trying styling. Very hipster-y. My only concern is that I'd end up looking like a gay Duke from the 18th century or a Bedouin trying to protect myself from a sandstorm. And yet I'm still strangely into them...

Me = very old today

Photo from Pretty Swell on Etsy, as seen on Bash Eco Events

It's my birfffday!

Would you mind if I took off today to go play with B (who very sweetly took off work today to celebrate with me - nicest boyfriend ever) and enjoy the day? I'm officially very old now and need some extra time to enjoy things now that I'm elderly. :)

I promise to be back soon. Hope you will be too!

Flowers in your hair

I had this incredible picture in my inspiration files and it got me thinking:

Photo by Arthur Elgort for Vogue Living, via decor8's Flickr stream

Not only is that an amazing couch - tufted upholstery? nailhead trim? coral pillow? Burberry throw? Check, check, and check. I die. So good! - but also the little girl is adorable. What really appealed to me most in the photo, though, are those fun flowered caps.

Something about them is so flirty and fun, even though they're totally utilitarian (and so much better than an ugly shower cap that you get for free at a hotel):

Photo Cig Harvey, via M.A. Belle

And I think what I really love about the cute caps is that I equate them with crazy old ladies - the fun crazy, not crazy crazy kind. I hope to one day be like that: old enough not to care if people look at me funny when I go into the grocery store rocking a flowered swim cap, and happy enough with myself after all the years that I'll wear exactly what I want, regardless of whether it's a bit kooky.

A friend and me, 50 years from now? Kim's the more buxom lady on the left, and I'm the paler gal with the turquoise cap (my fave color!) on the right. :)

Would you ever wear a flowered swim/bathing cap? Do you wear what makes you happy, regardless of what other people might think? I know as I hobble out of my 20s, I'm definitely wearing things I want to wear. At least there's something good about getting old!

More Moore: Julianne's Bulgari ad

I was flipping through a magazine yesterday and came across this ad for Bulgari’s Spring-Summer 2010 jewelry and watch ad campaign. Julianne Moore (or, "is that Amber Waves from Boogie Nights?" as B said) looks so gorgeous in the ad, portraying what Bulgari is calling “Eccentric Charisma” (whatever that means).

But what really got me - other than that I'm featuring another ginger whom I think looks beautiful (what is the world coming to??) - is that the lovely Ms. Moore is 49 years old. 49, people! The woman looks crazy good, and in a way that Photoshop can't fix up alone. Very impressive.

Va-Va-vintage Dior

The only word that comes to mind is {swoon}. Isn't this vintage Dior gown gorrrrgeous? And I'm not even talking as a wedding gown. No, to me this feels more like an Oscar gown. Or for a gala at the White House. Or to the Paris Opera.

Thank you to dress design decor for posting this picture and helping me over my fear of "old stuff" (what? vintage stores smell weird!).

I smell like a cupcake...

...and I like it.

B bought me Pink Sugar perfume as a gift and I've been walking around smelling like a cookie ever since then. I don't care if that officially makes me a 13-year-old; it smells so good!

Besides, the only other scent I've ever worn - Bobbi Brown beach - kept making people ask if I just put on tanning lotion. Does cupcake beat sunblock in your book?

Gift idea: for the man (or granny) in your life

Now I know what to get B for Christmas!

No, it's not a "head backhoe" (that's what she said! ha.), it's an "acoustic listening device." These were developed as part of air defense systems research for the Dutch army between World Wars 1 and 2.

Doesn't this one look comfy?

Kinda cool though. I've always wanted to be able to hear everything going on around me. Also perhaps my grandmother would like one of these...you know, because her current hearing aid is just too darn streamlined.
