Handmade Holiday Gifts: Aromatic Spritzers
Giving a gift to a fragrance lover? Rock their world with a handmade aromatic spritzer!
By definition, an aromatic spritzer is a fine-mist spray of essential oils added to a base of distilled water. Depending on the essential oils used, it can be used as an air freshener, linen spray, upholstery fragrance, facial mist, body spray and even stinky pet perfume!
To make an aromatic spritzer, I like to use 4oz amber glass bottles with an atomizer spray nozzle. Using glass (instead of plastic) keeps the integrity of the product, as no plastic can leach into the spritzer, altering the aroma.
Fill the bottle almost full with distilled water. Then the fun part - adding essential oils to create the desired aroma. If you are new to aromatherapy or blending essential oils, you may choose to stick with a single essential oil. Good one's to try are Rose, Lavender, Lemon and Sweet Orange. These make excellent home and linen freshening aromas and are also safe to use in body care in a diluted product (although citrus oils can cause sensitivity when applied to skin and should never be used prior to sun exposure - please use caution).
A great, cozy, warming home fragrance blend for the Holiday season would be the following (added to 4 oz. distilled water):
Please note: This particular blend is not intended for use on the body due to possibility of skin sensitivity.
10 drops cinnamon essential oil
6 drops clove essential oil
20 drops sweet orange essential oil
There are also several manufactured essential oil blends on the market, that you can also use without any knowledge of blending oils. Just use them in the same manner you would use a single oil. One of my all-time favorites is Young Living's Peace and Calming Oil, a blend of tangerine, orange, ylang ylang, patchouli and blue tansy.
It is ideal to keep the essential oils used per ounce of carrier to 9 -10 drops. This allows for a subtle aromatherapy experience that is not too overwhelming. Manufactured essential oil bottles come with a dropper installed so that you can accurately dispense single drops.
After adding the essential oils to the bottle of distilled water, simply screw on the spray top and give it a good shake. The product does need to be shaken just prior to each use, as the oils will separate from the water.
You can finish off the bottle with a beautiful label (see tomorrow's blog post for an easy peasy way to make them) and a bow or piece of raffia.
