World Blood Donor Day 2010

"New blood for the world"

WHO observes 14 June as the day to identify the lakhs and lakhs of people who save lives and recover the health of others by donating their blood.

14th of June, every year, marks the need to donate blood to prevent shortage of blood in hospitals and clinics. According to recent statics, out of the 80 countries with near to the ground blood donation rates (fewer than 10 donations per thousand people), 79 are developing nations.

This year’s global campaign theme is Young Donors, with the slogan "New blood for the world".

It focuses on the idea that the new generations of optimistic and energy-filled youngsters will voluntary donate blood to the people who are in need.

  • Being overweight makes people less healthy. Overweight people do not have more blood.
  • Giving blood does not get in the way with ability to execute physically. Advice to keep away from lifting heavy lifting or exhausting workouts for the rest of the day is given after the donation. You can get back on track the next day.
  • Most employers usually give time off when you want to donate blood.
  • Blood centers often run short of types O and B red blood cells.

Is donating blood safe?
Yes, donating blood is a pretty much safe process. However, it must be ensured that the needles and bags used to gather the blood are used only once and then safely discarded. This will help in putting a stop to any kind of infections and will ensure safety in the process of donating blood.

Can I give blood if I have been turned down before?
Mainly the reasons for which donors are not allowed to donate blood are temporary. For instance, one of the most common reasons is the low level of iron in the blood- but doctors say that iron levels fluctuate on regular basis and can be taken care of.  Based on the kind of reason for which you haven’t been allowed to donate blood, you can donate blood again.
