The porn industry is booming worldwide, and its’ consumers are not just curious children and teenagers, but almost everyone with an internet connection.
For certain people and couples, watching porn is a healthy part of their sex life, but the trouble arises when watching porn becomes an addiction. Addiction to any thing or substance is dangerous, as it proves to have negative consequences on one’s life and her/his relationships and work.
The question that arises is this: are you one of those who need a daily fix of pornography? Think about these questions:
- Do you spend hours every day surfing the internet looking for porn and then watching it?
- If you were denied pornography for a few days, what would happen to you?
- Your relationship with your partner or spouse; is it suffering because of your obsession?
- Are pornography and masturbation constant thoughts on your mind?
Pornography is not an innocent sexual toy; it can affect you and even distort your beliefs. Much ink has been spilt debating about the negative beliefs that pornographic material gives rise to. By negative beliefs it is meant, the treatment of women and often children in some movies/videos. Some images and videos can be extremely violent, which in turn put violent thoughts in the mind of the viewer. There have been recorded cases, where, pornography, has led people to rape.
Case studies have also shown that an addiction to pornography, leads to distance and a lack of intimacy in couples. Along with which, like any addiction, it affects your day to day life; your family, friends and work.
It will not be easy to get over your addiction; it never is, but it is possible. Accepting it is the first step, as soon as that happens, you are on the road to recovery.
• Say no - You come back home in the evening and as usual, the first thought on your mind, is searching for new videos. Here, however desperate the urge is, STOP yourself. Like in different types of addiction, you will face withdrawal symptoms; there will be times when you will want to give in. Therefore, it is advised, that you confide about your addiction to someone, like your partner, who will be able to help you to say no in such situations.
• Counselling - If you find yourself unable to stop yourself, you need to see a counselor. Take individual counselling, or you can try group therapy as well. Try both and see what works for you.
Prevention is better than cure however, and to prevent pornography from becoming an addiction, parents have an important role to play. Too often sex is made a taboo in one’s house in most societies, which leads children to satisfy their curiosities elsewhere; the internet in today’s generation. Have regular discussions regarding sex and sexuality with your child, and let him/her know that, safe and consensual sex between two adults is one of the keys to a happy and a fulfilled life.
