Earth Day - April 22, 2010

Here’s what you can do on this Earth day:
  • Organize a drive: Be it in your school, college, community, or office; gather people for this one day to walk the streets and make a difference. Your drive can be a cleanliness drive or one which encourages people to plant trees. For instance, make all the residents of your locality come together to clean your colony. Pick up all the litter that you see and put it in dustbins so that it can be properly disposed.

  • Raise awareness: Most people are unaware about the damage and the harm done to the environment by the smallest of actions; such as leaving the electricity constantly switched on; or wasting petrol by possessing multiple cars. Think of the various ways you can spread awareness; opt for theatre, street theatre, posters, an official ceremony, etc.

You would need to raise awareness about the current state of the natural world around us, and what every individual can do to make a change. Everyone if they contribute can make a significant change. Here’s a list of what every individual can and must do! Make sure to circulate this list.

  • Conserve water: Don’t have very long baths, don’t leave the water running while doing any other work, try to reuse water as much as possible.

  • Electricity: Switch off the lights, fans, air conditioners, heaters, geysers, computers when they are not being used. Don’t switch on any electrical appliance for longer than needed such as an air conditioner.

  • Transport: While going to your place of work, or education; try to find people to join you. This way you’re reducing the amount of fuel usage as well as air pollution. The best option is to travel by bus. Use a bicycle for short distances if you can.

  • Volounteer for an organization that works for the environment.

  • Do not litter, do not use plastic bags. Carry a cloth bag with you whenever you go out shopping.

  • The activities listed above will minimize consumption of natural resources as well as decrease pollution. Today, one hears reports of global warming, glaciers melting, temperatures rising etc. We have to start changing the way we live from NOW. Use the coming Earth day to make a difference. Start collecting information from today. So go ahead and start planning.
