Competition winners revealed ... Sports coach at Training Roadshow ... Committee chairmen wanted ... Interconstruct 09 ... Improve your branch ... Immediate past-president message ... Your vote counts

The craftily-captured creature from the deep turns out to be the husband of its photographer, Roz Stripe, from Cornwall, winner of the IOSH 'This is My Life' photography competition. The competition aimed to celebrate the lives of working people outside the workplace; and more than 400 entries sought to express the theme, 'This is my life ... health and safety helps me live it'.

Health and safety may not be the most obvious cause for celebration--it's one of those things we take for granted when all is well, only hitting the headlines when things go wrong. Yet the presentation and exhibition of the 12 final photographs provided a fitting party on the stylish top floor of London's Millbank Tower, offering heady, adventurous views above the capital.

After being presented with her [pounds sterling]1000 prize of photography equipment, a highly delighted Roz said: "I love taking photos, both underwater and above it.

"I think this competition was a perfect way to show that while rules and regulations are important in everything we do, applying common sense means we can do it safely."

Other finalists included photographs of children roaming the beach, a skydiver leaping from a hot-air balloon, a tight bend in a motocross race, a group of snow-bound mountaineers, and people chilling out at music festivals.

Runner-up to Roz was Emma Halliday, from Leeds, with a picture of herself living it up at last year's Leeds Festival. Third-place went to Darren Williams, of Bodelwyddan, whose shot captured the joy of two of his friends' children on Rhyl sands.

Speaking at the presentation event, IOSH president Nattasha Freeman said: "We were delighted with the standard of entries we received and choosing the winners was extremely difficult. The photographs radiated passion and love for a hobby, which is what we wanted to see."

She continued: "We wanted to demonstrate that safe workplaces and environments enable people to lead full and rewarding lives. Far too often health and safety people are accused of being the people with a clipboard saying 'don't do that, it's dangerous', or stopping people's fun. IOSH members really aren't in the business of stopping things from happening--our focus is on the adoption of risk awareness so that you can enjoy things, having removed or controlled the risk to yourself."

Fans of Frank Capra's classic feelgood movie, 'It's a Wonderful Life', will remember George Bailey (James Stewart) snapping to Clarence, his guardian angel: "I wish I'd never been born." Clarence proceeds to show him just how poorer the world would be if, indeed, he'd never been born. In a similar way, 'This is My Life' gave us a glimpse of just how much we'd miss in life if we weren't well protected by health and safety.

Happy Memorial Day

garden anywhere / wicker pot / apple tree / gloves / wind chimes / journal

Did you know that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day? I think I like the sound of that better. It's literal and explains it's purpose. I have always really enjoyed Memorial Day. Not only because you get to show respect to those who have passed away but the activities you get to do throughout the day. After you visit memorials or cemeteries, don't you feel reinvigorated to live the life you have? Well my sister and I felt very grateful for life and planted a garden. We're hoping that we're not marching our little plants to a horrible fate, since it's our first year gardening. I found some wonderful gardening items on Anthropologie.com that are all under $25! Maybe if we have the right tools we'll be more successful with our garden... even if that's not true at least we'll have some cute memorabilia. How do you spend your Memorial Day?

Don't forget to check back tomorrow. We have a wonderful gift idea!

Memorial Day 2009

Today is the day set aside each year to remember those that gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country and all she stands for. From the Revolutionary War up to the wars we're involved in today. For me personally, I have a hard time separating out those that died for Freedom and those that served for Freedom.

I've had family serve in nearly every war since the Revolutionary War. Some died, some returned. I've had friends that didn't return from Vietnam. But, in the recent past what is most thought of is our current situation. The soldiers that sacrificed to fight the war on terror.

There is one group also that didn't ask to be soldiers. They were people making a living, traveling for their jobs. Doing what they did everyday. They are the ones that died on September 11, 2001. The ones in the World Trade Center that were attacked. The ones in the Pentagon that were attacked. Those on the planes that were hijacked. The ones on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania. How many lives did they save by taking the plane back from the hijackers that day?

Flying my flag is a small gesture for what these people and so many other soldiers have given. But fly it, I am.

Gem Lake

Distance: 3.4 miles round trip
Elevation: 7,882 ft - 8,830 ft

Gem Lake

Gem Lake is one of my favorite hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park. It traverses an unusual igneous rock formation called Lumpy Ridge and reminds me of my youth hiking in the Sierra Nevadas.

Example of the well-maintained trail

Looking south from the trail. To the left is Twin Sisters, behind the large hill is Estes Cone, and the snow capped peaks are Longs, Meeker, and Mount Lady Washington.

The park has changed the trail head for Gem Lake since I last hiked it in 2006. There is a new, paved trailhead (Lumpy Ridge) with a nice bathroom and sign. Both the old and new trailheads are still on Devil's Gulch Road, which is right after the Stanley Hotel (see photo on my Winter RMNP photo shoot). The old trail used to skirt private property and wander by several homes. The new trail has a more natural feel to it and starts out right next to a large igneous boulder field.

The trail crosses large rock plateaus in several spots

Angled rocks. View is looking south east.

Gem Lake is a easy trail, and I will often take new hikers on it because the views are spectacular and the rocks add interest all along the way. Typical of trails in the park, the route is well maintained although towards the end, there is a section of high steps that would trouble someone with knee issues. Most of the trail is sandy with occasional traverses of broad rock plateaus.

A flat portion of the trail

Is this natural, or created by some ancient Atlantian civilization?

Besides the towering rocks, views of Estes Park and the surround peaks are visible from several locations. These would make an ideal al fresco dining spot for those more interested in lingering over a picnic lunch.

There are young aspens along the trail.

Paul Bunyans' boot. I knew someone that scrambled up this large rock and stuck his head through it. It is larger than you think.

Gem Lake itself is more of a pond and not a very spectacular destination. It is surrounded by rocks but compared with other high alpine lakes in the park, just does have the same appeal. It really is the route itself that is the appeal of the Gem Lake trail.

Faces in the rocks

Nearing the top, the rocks grow more dramatic. This wall is to the west.

There is a fiesty inhabitant of the Gem Lake area and that is the Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus lateralis). On a trip back in 2004, they were everywhere and were literally climbing into people's packs, climbing up their pant legs etc., all in an attempt to gather morsals of forbidden sandwiches. On this trip we did not see any, but we did not stay at the lake for long either.

A broader view of the Estes Valley and Peaks

The rock wall to the right of the trail just before the lake

The other nice feature of Gem Lake is that it is lower in altitude than other trails so it is suitable for the late fall or early spring. For a longer hike, one can head down the back side of Lumpy Ridge to Balanced Rock. I have done this once and found the trail somewhat monotonous, but since Gem Lake is short, the added excursion will at least give you mileage.

A Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel taken in 2004. At one point this little gal climbed up into my lap.

If you are visited the park for the first time and live at sea level, I would consider doing Gem Lake as one of your first hikes. It is short, lower in altitude, and the views will give you a perspective on the more traveled sourthern part of the park.

Smart Dressing - Style Tips for Curvy Women

Real women have curves and men love them too - Marilyn Monroe, Salma Hayek, Catherine Zeta Jones, Beyonce, Kim Kardashian are some of the most beautiful and admired celebs with curves. Women with hourglass figure are blessed, that's what they say - so girls if you have the curves, love them, its the most desirable shape on the planet.

To top it off, BBC published a research suggesting that curvy women are cleverer. The American researchers used data from a study of 16,000 women, collecting details of their body measurements and their scores in cognitive tests, they found that those women with a greater difference between the waist and hips, scored significantly higher on the intelligence tests, and so did their children. This suggests that women with an hourglass figure are brighter and have cleverer children, too.

So on top of being sexy we can say that we are more intelligent than the skinny girls.

How to dress if you have an hourglass shape

These are some style tips for women with curves:

1. Wear well-fitted clothes - a top that is too big will only make you look bigger and sloppier and clothes that are too tight will also make you look larger.

2. Dress well inside - a well-fitted bra and shapewear will camouflage all your problm areas and is your wardrobe and confidence staple. If your bra does not fit properly, it can make you look terrible. Since most hourglass figures are well-endowed, a well-fitted bra is a must have for you.

3. Show off your waist - Celebrate, accentuate and exaggerate that great waist. A small waist is considered the very symbol of sensuality, so don't hesitate to show off your small waist. Drawing attention to your waist with a belt or a top with a fitted waist will accentuate this great asset.

.
4. Darker Bottom and Lighter top - Wear a darker bottom and lighter coloured top to emphasize your waistline and to minimize your curves

5. Buy tops that are fitted and shaped to the waist.

6. Wear short fitted jackets - Shorter, fitted jackets will flatter your legs and waist.

7. Buy well-fitted sheaths - sheath dresses often come with a deep V-neckline. It usually has a defined waist and a figure-hugging silhouette and is often in a lightweight fabric such as silk or cotton. They flatter curvy figures and look great. Even wrap dresses go well withcurvy figures.

8. Choose pencil or slightly A-line skirts - pencil skirt will show the ratio between your waist and hip measurement, giving you a sexy silhouette. Straight styles and certain A-line skirts could also be right for you, as long as they are fitted around the waist and hips.

9. Refuse to buy hipster skirts and trousers look for high-waisted styles - apart from this avoid ruffles and pleats as these will add bulk. Go for a streamlined shape to show off your slinky silhouette.

10. Belt whenever you can - A dress or a shit with a belt will cinch you in accentuating your small waist.
.

11. Shapewear - Never underestimate the impact of body-shaping lingerie. It can hold you up and in, strategically reduce or enhance your curve of choice and would hide all your bumps and lumps. Marks and Spencer has some great shapewear you can pick from.

12. Wear V-neck or scoop neckline - These necklines slim the neck and chest and will lenghten your neck and make you appear smaller and slimmer. They will flatter your figure.
.

13. Avoid Elasticized Waistbands - they add bulk to your mid-section.

14. Boot cut jeans, pants with flared bottoms are for you - pants that fit properly will make you look slimmer, so don't try to hide those curves with loose pants to jeans. Instead pick well-fitted pants with flared bottoms or in boot cut style. They will balance your generous bottom and make you look slimmer. Avoid bottoms that are tapered and get narrower towards your ankles as they can make your bottom look large. If you want to wear the skinny jeans trend, go for slim fit instead. They are not very tapered and yet slim enough. Team them with some high heels to add height that would slim you down.
