May 19 is World Hepatitis Day
Hepatitis B and C get transmitted through blood. One must keep in mind some simple dos and don’ts on safe blood transfusion to prevent Hepatitis, says Dr Harprit Singh, Associate Consultant, Blood & Transfusion Medicine, Artemis Hospital Gurgaon.
Dos
1. Donate blood regularly and voluntarily
2. Insist on blood which has already been tested for safety, for eg. NAT tested blood
3. Maintain ambient transportation conditions for blood or its components
Don’ts
1. Do not promote paid or professional donation
2. One should not provide false information while donating blood
3. Do not insist on fresh blood, as it means the blood has not been tested for various safety parameters.
